As of Feb. 1, 1997, We have begun researching the biographies of the soldiers and officers involved in the Walker Court Martial. Credit to the researchers is set out in the individual biographies.

Judge Advocate 2nd. Lt. Guernsey, Co. I, 47th. New York

Guernsey was 26 when he enlisted as a private 17 Sept 1862 [ the day of Antietam]. Promoted to Commessary Sergeant in March 1863 and commissioned 2LT Company I on 5 May 1863. Promoted 1st LT 6 weeks later. He was promoted to Captain and assumed command of Company I as of 18 April 1865. He was mustered out with the Regiment on 30 August 1865 in Raleigh North Carolina. Defense Counsel - 1st. Lt. Smith, Co. G, 47th. N.Y.

Smith was 1st LT of Co G at the time of the CM. Promoted to Captain on 21 Feb 1864 as a result of the death of Captain Henry Arnold [Co. K] KIA at Olustee Fl. He was subsequently killed inaction on 7 May 1864 at Chester Station Virginia when the unit was transferred to the Army of the James in April 1864.
