Guernsey was 26 when he enlisted as a private 17 Sept 1862 [ the day of Antietam]. Promoted to Commessary Sergeant in March 1863 and commissioned 2LT Company I on 5 May 1863. Promoted 1st LT 6 weeks later. He was promoted to Captain and assumed command of Company I as of 18 April 1865. He was mustered out with the Regiment on 30 August 1865 in Raleigh North Carolina. Smith was 1st LT of Co G at the time of the CM. Promoted to Captain on 21 Feb 1864 as a result of the death of Captain Henry Arnold [Co. K] KIA at Olustee Fl. He was subsequently killed inaction on 7 May 1864 at Chester Station Virginia when the unit was transferred to the Army of the James in April 1864.
