Re Charleston Civil War History Weekend,
June 12 - 14, 1998
The Civil War will return to the streets of Charleston, SC and the city's harbor will thunder with battle when War at Flood Tide commemorates the 135th. Anniversary of the Siege of Charleston on June 12 - 14, 1998.
Major events planned for the weekend include a Battle in Charleston Harbor between two Union schooners and four Confederate Shore Batteries; a band concert at Charleston's Battery concluding with patriotic music and artillery accompaniment; and a parade of horse drawn artillery, troops and civilians. An army camp will be established at the Hazel Parker athletic fields in historic downtown Charleston on the banks of the Cooper River with a hospital, a signal post and army camp. Castle Pinckney, an abandoned fort in Charleston Harbor, will be reactivated. Activities at the camp and at historic locations throughout the city will give visitors a sense of what Charleston was like during the last weeks before the city came under direct bombardment 135 years ago.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the preservation of Charleston's historic Market Hall, once and future site of the Charleston United Daughters of the Confederacy Museum, now being renovated by the City of Charleston.
