1st. National CSA Flag The Battle of Secessionville was fought on James Island, near Charleston, South Carolina on June 16, 1862. This was the first major Federal effort to take Charleston. This page pulls together documents and information on this Battle found on the Civil War @ Charleston web site and other locations. Efforts are currently being made to preserve the remaining portions of the site. An annual reenactment of the Battle is held and information on that event may also be found here as it becomes available.

Information on the Historic Battle

Preserving the Site

  1. The State of South Carolina has purchased Battery Lamar and 10 surrounding acres for a Heritige Preserve now being developed.
  2. Work on and preservation of the site is guided by the Ft. Lamar Stewardship Committee.
  3. The Feb. 15, 1997 Cleanup - See images of the 40 people who worked carefully clearing the site and read details of the work in progress.
  4. Our January 1997 Ft. Lamar Update includes details on the volunteer cleanup day planned for Feb. 15; The January 17 Public Hearing and Preservation Suggestions Submitted at that hearing by William Hamilton. Contact information for Archeologist Chris Judge, who is directing the project for the S.C. Dpt. of Natural resources is also included.
