Charleston Must Be Taken!

Official approval of a Federal encampment on Folly Island April 12-14 has been granted. Sanctioned by the City of Folly Beach, Charleston County Parks and Recreation and the Museum on the Common in Mount Pleasant, this is the first of a planned annual event.

The weekend is the final three days of "Civil War Week" in Charleston. Confederate units have been invited to camp on Morris Island and Fort Sumter. Federal activities will be minimum but will include: Posting of Pickets, Morning Formations, Drill Sessions, Ration Issues, and a 6.5 mile march to Little Folly for a memorial ceremony.

Water, Wood, Parking and Sinks are provided. Straw will not be available as the camp will be within the sand dunes on the south end of Folly Island in the Folly Beach County Park. Rations of Rice, Coffee, Hardtack and Onions will be issued to pre-registered units.

Folly Island was occupied from April 1863 until Charleston occupation in February 1865. Due to the semi-permanent nature of the camps, soldiers were issued Wedge tents. We will be requiring all participants to bring A-frames only for tentage. Due to limited space in the dunes, plan on four men per Wedge tent.

Sponsored by the 47th New York State Volunteers "Washington Grays, Inc."
