Military actions are set out in Chronological Order. We eventually hope to have information on every significant action around and in Charleston and within 1 day's march or ride of the City, an approximate radius of 50 miles from the City's defensive perimeter. Suggestions and comments are welcomed by William Hamilton.


The War in Charleston features a determined, sucessful Confedate defense of the City against superior forces for nearly three years; some of the first significant actions by African American Troops; technically advanced weapons and tactics; and memorable bravery and sacrifice by the men of the Confederate and Federal Armies. 1860

1861

1862

Federal army lands on Folly island and launches first attempt to take Charleston which fails. Blockade tightens.

1863

General Gilmore and Admaral Dalhgren mount the largest assult on Charleston of the War, but in the year when Vicksburg Falls and the Confederate army is forced to retreat from Gettysburg, Charleston holds against the most technically advanced military operation of the war.

1864

Charleston faces and defeats another determined attempt at invasion and conquest by the Federal army despite a garrison diminished by the assignment of troops to other areas. Elsewhere Atlanta, Savannah, Chatanooga and Northern Virginia fall.

1865

Sherman's movement thought the interior forces the evacuation of Charleston. Federal occupation begins. A gala celebration at Ft. Sumter on April 12 sees General Anderson raise the same American Flag over Sumter that was hauled down in surrender four years before.
