WONDER WHY YOU DON'T HEAR MORE ABOUT CHARLIE IN THE MEDIA?
The media is supposed to present the news. Let us tell you about how some media have covered the U.S. Senate race
In December of 1995 WIS television and THE STATE (Columbia) newpaper paid for a poll regarding the U.S. Senate race.
Since they paid for the poll they have every right to ask what they wish BUT since they make their money doing news coverage one would expect them to be interested in ALL candidates.
On December 18, 1995, acting on a supporter's tip that the poll would not include his name Charlie went to the newsroom of THE STATE and confronted political reporter Lee Bandy. Charlie advised Mr. Bandy that if THE STATE and WIS left Charlie Thompson off the poll their credibility as news media would be tarnished. As a U.S. Senate candidate in the 1992 primary Charlie Thompson polled nearly 25% of the vote and could not be passed off as a 'fringe' candidate.
HOWEVER, when the poll was taken on DECEMBER 26-27 it asked voters if they would vote for:
Strom Thurmond......Carroll Campbell....OR Secretary of State Jim Miles.
Charlie, the ONLY announced candidate wasn't included!
So.......if you wonder why there are so few good candidates; maybe they're out there but the news media just doesn't want to let you know.
The editor of THE STATE at least had the courtesy to send a letter of apology to the Thompson for U.S. Senate campaign. We haven't heard from WIS.
