CITY OF CHARLESTON DEMOCRATIC PARTY PLATFORM We, the Democratic Party of the City of Charleston, pledge ourselves to promote all efforts to provide an efficient and progressive city government that will be concerned with the quality of life of all its citizens. We endorse the program of our city administration to maintain a visible, responsive, and effective police force that has been recognized nationally. We believe, however, that the prevention of crime is not just a police department problem; it requires involvement of the entire community to denounce all forms of crime and to seek to remove the root causes. We encourage full support for our city's fire department which has also been recognized nationally. For public safety and emergency preparedness, we commend superb leadership of our city, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo. We urge the continuation of the very successful housing policy of our city administration and encourage an accelerated effort to remove or have repaired deteriorated properties which are a blight on the community. We applaud the various administration plans to encourage economic development of commercial properties including revitalization of upper King Street and older West Ashley shopping districts. We encourage attracting new businesses to our community and the continued effort to manage tourism. We are proud of the accomplishments of our Democratic administration in beautifying the streets, improving and embellishing our fine park system, especially West of the Ashley and James and John's Islands. We hail the efforts of the city in the protection and preservation of neighborhoods. In particular, we appreciate the extension of this effort West Ashley with the successful resolution of the location of the Substance Abuse Commission and the high power transmission lines, and we anticipate similar success throughout the City. We support continued enrichment of our cultural life through such activities as the Spoleto Festival, Piccolo Spoleto, the Moja Festival, etc. We urge our city administration to work diligently toward completion of the drainage improvement projects and to work aggressively with state and federal agencies who are responsible for the completion of the Mark Clark Expressway, the replacement of the Grace Bridge, and for resurfacing of most of our streets. We applaud the city for lowering its tax rate and exercising fiscal prudence. Recognizing the unfair burden placed on our citizens by the policy of reasessment by the State of South Carolina, we encourage efforts to reform the process of property reassessment so as not to burden our citizens. The Democratic Party of the City of Charleston calls upon the citizens of this city to think about its government not as THE government, but in reality OUR government, our responsibility. A hallmark of the administration of this great city is how well its citizens are involved in working for the common good. -- Adopted by the City Democratic Convention, Charleston, SC June 13, 1995 ...
