COMMISSIONER OF PUBLIC WORKS (CPW)
Note: Mr Burky is seeking re-election to CPW. The position
carries no salary.
PRIORITIES FOR CPW:
- 1. Protect and improve water source, including:
- (a) Tunnel or large line to Durham Canal to improve raw
water quality; to be paid for with savings in treatment
chemicals over time;
- (b) Treatment and sludge disposal system to be put into
effect.
- 2. Continue good staffing practices and training. Have
approximately same number of employees now as four years
ago. Quality and efficiency training.
- 3. Complete service to Sullivans Island, Isle of Palms, Daniel
Island, and hopefully Mt Pleasant.
- 4. Hold debt to minimum as to new issues.
- WITH RESPECT TO WASTE WATER:
- 1. Carry out overdue maintenance on infrastructure.
- 2. Develop permanent solution to disposal of solids at end of
treatment process.
- 3. Bring St Andrews' system up to par.
BIOGRAPHY:
- Native of Pickens, W. Va.
- Educated in public schools, Davis & Elkins College, Akron
University, Goodyear Industrial University, Palmer College
(Charleston SC).
- Retired banker.
- Two grown children, two grandchildren.
- Started professional life as school teacher. Served as St
Andrews School District Trustee. Formerly member and Chair,
Charleston County School Board, member South Carolina State
School Board. Was Board Chairman for Palmer College when it
merged with Trident Technical College.
