Current Status
The Hunley Commission has met several times during the winter
and has authorized the Chairman of the Commission to organize an
assessment expedition to the site of the Hunley in the event
that the U. S. Navy and the State of South Carolina are unable
to reach an agreement on an assessment expedition and
partnership in the near future. The expedition to the Hunley
will be a non-invasive expedition geared only to use electronic
equipment to do assessments for the purpose of determining the
condition of the Hunley and to get a better background on what
types of techniques will be needed to raise the Hunley and what
kind of finances will also realistically be needed far such an
event. The Hunley Commission continues to negotiate with the
federal government in hopes of reaching an amicable.
relationship, whereby the State of South Carolina and the. U.S.
Navy can go forward as partners in siting the Hunley in
Charleston, South Carolina and preserving it in a historically
correct fashion.
Interment Plan
The commission has submitted to the U.S. Navy an interment plan
for handling the unidentified remains of those on board. To
date the U.S. Navy has not agreed with the state on this
interment plan.
Save the Hunley Account
The state has set up a "Save the Hunley" account and is
receiving contributions. These contributions can be sent to the
State of South Carolina to be used to offset the cost of
assessing, raising, and restoring the H.L. Hunley. Donations
should be sent to the "Save the Hunley" fund, State Budget and
Control Board, 1201 Main Street, Suite 700, Columbia, SC
29201.
