Living History Demonstrations

Small encampments and demonstrations of period activities will take place in The Charleston Museum courtyard. Historian Gary Remy, the 54th Massachusetts Regiment Reenactors and the 10th South Carolina Regiment Reenactors will recreate daily activities and military procedures.

Keeping the Yankees at Bay

Board the schooner Pride for a two-hour narrated tour of Charleston Harbor. See Morris Island (1865), Ft. Ripley, Castle Pinckney (the first fort captured by the South) and, of course, Ft. Sumter. A tour of Ft. Sumter is not included. The boat leaves from the Ripley Light Marina (Take Albemarle Road / Marina is located next to California Dreaming Restaurant).

The James Island Defenses

A guided tour by bus will provide a special insight into the defense of Charleston. The first stop is McLeod Plantation, owned by Historic Charleston Foundation. This site was used as a Confederate unit headquarters, commissary and hospital and also as Federal officers quarters and a hospital. The tour will then proceed to the Dill Sanctuary, owned by The Charleston Museum, and includes a walk to Battery Pringle. Both sites are open to conference participants only.

Civil War Walking Tour

A leisurely stroll through the citys French quarter and along its mansion-lined waterfront (in 1865) to the historic Battery will show not only the political and military strategy involved in the siege of Charleston, but also how Charlestonians endured this tragic era.

The Age of Great Possessions

A special exhibit currently on display presents artifacts of life in Victorian Charleston, including the war period. Portions of the museum's estensive collection of Civil War artifacts will also be on display including weapons, uniforms, photographs and period silver.
